Optim-GLS

The project "Development of Optimized Operational Strategies for BESS for Industrial Sustainability and Market Integration at GreenLab Skive" will develop a proof of concept that will be validated using a digital twin in AAU’s Smart Energy Lab in order to map the real-time dynamics of the actual park and ensure grid compliance of the control system.

As part of the Power-Carbon-Water Nexus initiative, this project aims to increase the profitability of Eurowind Energy’s newly installed 45 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at GreenLab Skive.

The BESS is one of the most expensive components of the renewable energy park. Therefore, a major objective is to incorporate battery lifetime awareness into the control and operating strategy to prolong its lifetime. Furthermore, possible multi-market stacking is investigated to add further revenue streams. This includes trading within several energy markets and providing ancillary services.

Finally, there is hope that higher profitability of utility-scale BESS will attract investors. This would lead to cheap renewable energy being stored more often rather than curtailed, thereby driving forward the green transition.

What the researchers think:
"The GLS research community proved to be highly motivated and committed to pioneering projects and exploring unconventional possibilities, leading us all towards more environmentally friendly, symbiotic industries. The constructive meetings and workshops we have had so far formed a solid foundation for this and possible future projects, ensuring high motivation across all project partners"
