HONORE - Electrochemistry

HONORE Research Project

The Holistic Odor Nullification with Oxidative Removal by Electrochemistry (HONORE) project investigates whether it is possible to use electrochemistry neutralize unpleasant odours from a given industry, in a process referred to as  to electro-scrubbing. It will be tested to determine whether smells from industrial processes in GreenLab can be reduced.

Working closely with VestJyllands Andel this project identified the odour causing molecules that are present in the exhaust gases from the factory after their odour reduction methods. The identified molecules, Methyl Mercaptan and Trimethylamine (TMA), were then tested to see if removal by electro-scrubbing could be performed.

While the removal of methyl mercaptan via electro-scrubbing is well documented in literature, no such study had been conducted for TMA. This project showed that this could be achieved although the chemical mechanisms for this process are still not fully understood. Furthermore, the process used a high amount of electrical power compared to the electro-scrubbing of methyl mercaptan. This leaves the field open to further study into the mechanisms and ways to reduce the power consumption of the process.
